CBCT

Seeing Beyond the Surface: Advanced Dental Imaging with CBCT

A CBCT (Cone-Beam Computed Tomography) is a special type of X-ray machine used primarily in dentistry and certain medical fields. Think of it as an upgraded X-ray that creates detailed 3D images of your teeth, jawbone, nerve pathways, and sinuses, rather than the flat, 2D images you get from a regular X-ray.

Why Do We Use CBCT Imaging?

The ability to view your oral anatomy in three dimensions provides our dentists with unparalleled insights, leading to more accurate diagnoses, precise treatment planning, and ultimately, better outcomes for you. Here’s how CBCT is a game-changer in modern dentistry:

  • Precision for Dental Implants: CBCT is indispensable for dental implant planning. It allows us to:

    • Accurately assess bone density and volume.

    • Identify the exact location of critical nerves and sinus cavities to ensure safe and precise implant placement.

    • Determine the optimal size and angle for your implants, maximizing success and longevity.

  • Complex Extractions (Especially Wisdom Teeth): For impacted wisdom teeth or other complex extractions, CBCT helps us visualize the tooth’s exact position, its relationship to surrounding nerves, and any potential challenges, minimizing risks and ensuring a smoother procedure.

  • Root Canal Therapy (Endodontics): CBCT allows us to see the intricate and often complex anatomy of root canal systems, helping us identify hidden canals, fractures, or infections that might be missed with traditional X-rays, leading to more successful root canal treatments.

  • Orthodontic Treatment Planning: For orthodontic cases, CBCT provides a comprehensive view of jaw relationships, tooth positions, and growth patterns, enabling more precise and effective treatment plans for aligning your teeth and bite.

  • Diagnosis of Jaw and TMJ Disorders: We can evaluate the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding structures in detail, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of jaw pain, clicking, and other TMJ-related issues.

  • Detection of Pathology: CBCT can help us identify cysts, tumors, infections, and other abnormalities in the jawbone and surrounding areas, often at an early stage.

  • Pre-Surgical Planning: For any oral surgery, from bone grafting to sinus lifts, CBCT provides the detailed roadmap needed for a predictable and safe procedure.

The CBCT Scan Experience

Getting a CBCT scan is a quick, comfortable, and non-invasive process:

  1. Preparation: You’ll be asked to remove any metal objects that could interfere with the scan, such as jewelry, eyeglasses, or hearing aids.

  2. Positioning: You’ll sit or stand comfortably, with your head gently stabilized to ensure clear images.

  3. Scanning: The CBCT machine will slowly rotate around your head for 20 seconds. You simply need to remain still.

  4. Results: The radiologist reviews the images and delivers are professional report within 12 days.

Safety and Radiation Exposure

We understand you may have questions about radiation exposure. While CBCT scans do involve a small amount of radiation, they use significantly less than conventional medical CT scans. The benefits of the detailed diagnostic information they provide far outweigh the minimal risk, especially considering that the precision they offer can often prevent the need for additional X-rays or more invasive procedures in the future.
