Sleep Dentistry
At Lakeridge Dental Centre, we prioritize your comfort and can provide Sleep Dentistry services, including General Anesthesia and IV Sedation, administered by our highly qualified Medical Anesthesiologist, Dr. Grant Lu.
Dr. Lu is a specialist with a Fellowship in Anesthesiology (FRCPC) from the University of Toronto, who provides safe, hospital-grade anesthetic care right here in our office for both adult and pediatric patients. This service is ideal for complex surgical procedures, for patients with dental anxiety, or for anyone who wishes to be completely comfortable or asleep during their treatment.
Here are our sedation options:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): Ideal for mild anxiety, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and provides a relaxed, euphoric feeling that wears off quickly after the procedure. You’ll be able to drive yourself home.
- Oral Moderate Sedation with Nitrous Oxide: For those with moderate anxiety, this option combines a prescribed oral medication taken before your appointment with the calming effects of nitrous oxide. You’ll feel very relaxed and may have little memory of the procedure. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment.
- 1 pill sedation: For those with mild to moderate anxiety, the patient takes a prescribed pill, usually a benzodiazepine, before their dental appointment to achieve a state of deep relaxation and reduced awareness during the procedure.
- IV Sedation: Administered directly into your bloodstream, IV sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation, often leading to a “twilight sleep” where you are conscious but unlikely to remember the procedure. This is a great option for more complex procedures or significant dental phobia. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home.
- General Anesthesia: For the most apprehensive patients or extensive procedures, general anesthesia induces a state of complete unconsciousness, ensuring you feel no pain or anxiety throughout your treatment. This is administered by a qualified anesthesiologist. A responsible adult must accompany you to and from your appointment.
We understand that choosing the right sedation option can be a big decision. Our experienced team will discuss your medical history, anxiety levels, and the specifics of your procedure to recommend the most suitable and safest sedation method for you.
