What is periodontics?
Periodontics focuses on treating conditions that affect the tissues that support your teeth such as gingival tissues (gums) and jaw bones.
Why would you see a periodontist?
Individuals can be cared for by a periodontist for an extended period of time as well as only temporarily. Patient’s are often referred to a periodontist by their general dentist and then return back to their regular dentist once treatment is completed. Patients may see a periodontist for a variety of treatments including; gum grafting, bone grafting, and frenectomy treatment.
Individuals who see a periodontist for long periods of time are often those who have gum disease or those who are predisposed to gum disease. These patients often require periodontal cleanings in conjunction to their regular cleanings in their general dentists office. In these cases, the periodontist would work closely alongside the regular dentist to ensure the best care to the patients.
